Infectious Disease

The report has identified infectious diseases as a short-term risk to humanity and warns that the world may witness another contagion unless we're vigilant.

COVID-19 caused more than 2 million deaths worldwide and its long-term health impacts will continue to have devastating consequences, the report says.

Livelihood Crisis

Working hours equivalent to 495 million jobs, were lost in the second quarter of 2020 alone, and the pandemic's economic shockwave and also lead to uneven recovery. 

According to the report, only 28 economics are expected to have grown in 2020.

Extreme Weather Events

Although lockdown caused global emissions to fall in the first half of 2020, evidence from the 2008 financial crisis warns that emission could bounce back.

The year also saw a wave of tropical hurricanes, floods, and wildfires, and 2021 is certain to bring more WEF noted.

Cybersecurity Failure

Cybersecurity poses a critical technological risk to the world in the short term.

As more of our lives move online, cyberattacks will become more destructive, triggering huge financial loss and social instability, WEF says.

Digital Inequality

Internet users range from more than 87% in high-income countries to less than 17% in low-income countries.

The report notes that this widening digital gap can undermine inclusive recovery. Progress towards it is also threatened by growing digital dependency, information suppression, and manipulation.
