Mars has a thin atmosphere composed mainly of carbon dioxide, with trace amounts of other gases such as argon and nitrogen. The atmospheric pressure on the Martian surface is only about 1% of that on Earth. This means that any human settlers on Mars would need to live in pressurized environments or wear specialized suits to survive.

The thin atmosphere also means that the planet has a weaker greenhouse effect, resulting in colder temperatures. The average surface temperature on Mars is about -80 degrees Fahrenheit, making it inhospitable for humans without proper insulation and heating.


Despite the harsh conditions, scientists have been studying ways to terraform Mars and make it more habitable. One idea is to release gases, such as carbon dioxide, into the Martian atmosphere to create a thicker atmosphere and increase the greenhouse effect. This would lead to warming and potentially make it possible for liquid water to exist on the surface.


Another way to create a breathable atmosphere on Mars would be to extract the carbon dioxide from the Martian atmosphere and convert it into oxygen. This process, called “aerobic respiration”, would require significant energy and technology, but it could theoretically provide a sustainable source of oxygen for human settlements.

Scientists have also been studying the possibility of finding microbial life on Mars, which would suggest that some form of life may be able to survive in the current Martian environment. In 2018, NASA's Insight lander detected a "molecular fingerprint" of methane in the Martian atmosphere, which could be a sign of microbial life.


Creating a breathable atmosphere on Mars would be a major challenge, but it's not impossible. With further research and advancements in technology, we may one day see human settlements on the red planet with a breathable atmosphere.
