“Green crackers” are so named because they “do not contain harmful chemicals” that would cause air pollution. Components in firecrackers are replaced with others that are “less dangerous” and “less harmful.” This was invented by scientists at the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research’s National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI).

Green Crackers - Full On Fireworks And Dhamaka with 0% Pollution! |
The idea, proposed by Science & Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan, was announced in January. It was carried forward by a network of CSIR labs, including the Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI), the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, the National Botanical Research Institute, and the National Chemical Laboratory. The mission was to replace or reduce dangerous components with less harmful materials. Thus they came up with 3-4 formulations and looked at 30-40% of active materials which reduce particulate matter.”
Green Crackers - How Much Safe?
When the "Green Crackers" were introduced, Harsh Vardhan, Union minister of health at that time, described them as “eco-friendly” crackers. It’s clear, though, that they aren’t. “All crackers that produce smoke are harmful,” Randeep Guleria, chief of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Aiims) in Delhi, told NDTV in an interview on 8 November. “Even green crackers at times produce noxious gases that can also cause acute effect as far as lungs are concerned.”
Should crackers be banned on Diwali? It's a stupid question. Diwali is 1 day, 0.27% of the year. Pollution comes from 99.6% of days of poor planning and regulation. We should focus on fixing that.
Also, Diwali is not the only occasion where firecrackers are used.
- New year
- Launch and closing ceremony of Festivals
- Olympics
- Sports events
- Award Functions
- Bastille Day in Paris
